Road casualties at lowest levels since records began

Partners across the public, private and voluntary, community and faith sectors are continuing to work together to improve road safety.

The number of people killed and seriously injured on Sheffield’s roads fell to 211 last year - the lowest figure since records began in 1979.  This is down 30% on 2007.

Five years ago, Sheffield City Council was set a target by national Government to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured to 267 from an average of 316 per year.  Such outstanding progress now means that the Council has been given a £1.2 million bonus for smashing its target.

Over the coming months, work will be done which will target drivers in high risk groups in particular.

Although 24 children were still killed or seriously injured in road accidents in 2008, this is down 38% on 2007, representing excellent progress.  Schools in the highest casualty areas have had an expanded programme of road safety activity, and work is ongoing to ensure that the number of casualties continues to fall next year.
