Activity Sheffield

Activity Sheffield offers a range of physical activity, sport and play sessions across the city.  Their aim is to make Sheffield people more physically active.  With people in the UK being increasingly less active and health being a major concern, Activity Sheffield are keen to reverse this trend, not only because of health and fitness benefits, but also because it makes people feel good and is great fun.

During its first year Activity Sheffield’s physical sessions attracted almost 500,000 participants.

The Active Manor and Castle Woodthorpe Project (AMCW) is joint funded and managed by Activity Sheffield, Sheffield City Council and Green Estate, which is a local Social Enterprise Organisation.  It was set up in 2005 to encourage and support people in the local area to be more physically active.  They also encourage the use of green spaces by delivering sport sessions to all ages and abilities and to offer school holiday provision.

Over the last 8 months AMCW has delivered three training courses to enable local people to gain new skills and experiences and to develop communication and self esteem.   Over 50 local people have been trained and undertaken a minimum of 10 hours voluntary work at local clubs and organisations.

The courses have included football and community sports leadership courses.  Participants have covered areas of work including first aid, child protection, long term athlete development, health and safety, communication, planning, preparing and understanding sporting activities.  The intention is that they will then have the skills to help train others and therefore benefit the surrounding community.
