Q&A with Laura Moynahan, Chief Executive Zest, a leading development trust
In each issue of the SFP Update we table five topical questions to Sheffield luminaries.
- Places & Spaces - What’s your favourite place or space in Sheffield?
The Rivelin Valley. I have fond childhood memories of playing here – in the paddling pools, the stepping stones on the river and fishing for tadpoles. My own children played here and the dog still loves it! - What would you like to see Sheffield famous for?
As a great place to live – whatever your age or background. - Do you think the perception of Sheffield is changing?
There are internal and external perceptions. Externally I think perceptions of the city are improving due to the music scene, the large numbers of students and the city’s cultural and sporting offer. Internally it is more difficult - as Sheffielders have always been the city’s most severe critics! - Burning Issue – What needs to get better in Sheffield?
Education and skills. These are the key, not only to a successful city economy, but also to making our neighbourhoods better places to live and work. On an individual level, everyone should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential and support to overcome barriers. - What impact do community organisations have in improving the city?
The “third sector” as it is increasingly known, covers a wide range of organisations – from a small lunch club or mother and toddler group to large development trusts delivering services and contracts for the city. In all cases, they are about improving quality of life and delivering the “Heineken effect” – getting to parts that others cannot reach. The sector empowers people and communities, creates employment and other opportunities, improves and delivers services and effects change. It is an essential and important part of the city.
