Sheffield Is My Planet
Sheffield First Environment Partnership and marketing and communications agency Diva Creative held the second successful ‘Sheffield Is My Planet Week’ from 2nd – 8th June 2008. The week involved a range of events focussing on local people and the business community.
Sheffield Is My Planet is a public information campaign that aims to raise awareness of climate change, reduce the city’s carbon footprint and provide solutions towards climate adaptation.
This year the campaign focussed on two main priorities: transport and home energy use.
A giant inflatable ‘Sheffield Is My Planet’ globe acted as an information hub at Barkers Pool, bringing together the very best of Sheffield’s environmental organisations to offer advice about climate change and encourage members of the public that their actions make a difference. A hugely popular bicycle-powered smoothie-maker was also on hand to give the day the fun factor.
To celebrate World Environment Day, Sheffield Is My Planet opened a Green Market on Fargate, selling environmentally friendly goods. All the products were free range, organic, fair trade, ethical, locally sourced or recycled. The market helped to highlight how easy it is to buy “green” products. Sheffield City Council and Veolia Environmental Services also held a ‘Plastic Bag Amnesty’, where the public exchanged carrier bags for reusable ‘bags for life’.
Sheffield Is My Planet Hothouse was an event for businesses to explore the challenges of climate change and how Sheffield can move forward for a low carbon future. Interactive round-table discussions at the event helped to shape the city’s approach.
Sheffield Is My Planet was also present at Meadowhall Shopping Centre to offer information and advice on how people can ‘do their bit’ for the local environment.
