Alcohol - It's No Laughing Matter: Sheffield Alcohol Conference

Sheffield Drugs and Alcohol Action Team, in collaboration with Sheffield First Partnership, held Sheffield’s first alcohol conference. The conference aim was to facilitate further development of the vision for Sheffield in relation to reducing alcohol related harm and promoting sensible drinking among the adult population.

The conference was held at the City Hall in Sheffield on the 26 September.  Key speakers included Nick Clegg MP, Chief Superintendent Paul Broadbent, Jo Daykin-Goodall Director of the Substance Misuse Strategy and Jan Sobieraj Chief Executive of the Sheffield PCT.  The event was hosted by Christa Akroyd from the Look North television programme.

Alcohol can play an important and positive role in British society. But excessive drinking among some sections of the population has become a cause for considerable concern.

Sheffield has a vision for the city which is to minimise the health harm, violence, crime and antisocial behaviour associated with alcohol, while at the same time ensuring that adults who choose to drink are able to enjoy alcohol safely and responsibly.

The scope of the conference included the seven main areas addressed by the Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy:

  • The Impact of Alcohol on Specific Groups in the Community
  • The Strategic Framework
  • Education and Communication (Adults)
  • Alcohol Treatment Services
  • Young People
  • Alcohol Related Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour
  • Working with the Alcohol Industry
