Sheffield - Where Everyone Matters
Community Cohesion Strategy Launch
Sheffield First Partnership launched the new Community Cohesion Strategy, ‘Sheffield – Where Everyone Matters’ on 10 December 2008. The launch was held at the Millennium Galleries and was attended by members of the Elders’ Congress and the Youth Council.
We wanted the launch event to demonstrate cohesion in action.
The idea for the launch event came from an earlier cohesion community event where we had asked people how we could improve the relationships between people of different ages - one of the suggestions was more opportunities for them to come together to solve a shared issue or concern.
Local people told us that young and older people often have mixed views about each other, each having concerns or misconceptions about the other.
Providing the opportunity for young people and older people to meet and talk to each other helped to increase mutual understanding. Everyone found the event enjoyable and thought-provoking.
So much so, that it was agreed that there need to be regular shared meetings between older and young people. A number of big ideas were identified to provide opportunities for young people and older people to come together regularly to have fun, share ideas and learn from each other. These are being followed up and we hope to be able to announce more very soon.
Cllr Paul Scriven, Leader of Sheffield City Council and Chair of Sheffield First Partnership, launched the strategy which can be downloaded below.
