Sheffield is one city with half a million people, all different. Everyone has a story to tell. Tell us yours...
In My Shoes encourages us to see things from another person’s point of view – to ‘stand in their shoes’.
By telling a brief story about ourselves, other people can learn from our experiences, our outlook, and what makes us tick. And in the same way, we can learn about others.
“The more we understand each other, the harder it is to be intolerant and the easier it is to work together on the things we all care about” Cllr Paul Scriven, Leader of Sheffield City Council and Chair of Sheffield First Partnership.
Yes. Everyone has a story to tell. This is your chance to tell your story, so other people can understand what it’s like to stand in your shoes.
Absolutely. Everyone’s story is interesting. We all have experiences that other people can learn from.
- Put your story on our website and read other people’s stories. Send us a picture of your shoes too if you want (e-mail it to cpu@sheffield.gov.uk).
- Visit one of the roadshows being held in shopping centres in the week beginning 6 July.
- Come to the In My Shoes event in the Peace Gardens on Wednesday 8 July 5.30 – 7.00pm. Meet people, swap stories and be entertained.
Yes. Organised groups have an important role to play in encouraging people to take part and in taking their own initiatives. Groups can get involved in a variety of ways. We will be giving awards to those groups that do the most imaginative 'life swaps'.
Yes, In My Shoes is a is a great opportunity for schools. We'd love to hear what your school has done as part of In My Shoes. We will be giving awards to those schools that involve their children in the most imaginative ways.
- The easiest way to tell your story is on the website.
- Think about something about yourself that is surprising, eye-opening, or memorable. Is there something about you that other people would not expect? - perhaps because of your age, gender, colour or sexuality?
- Try to keep the story short – less than 100 words would be ideal. Some very short stories can be really memorable. There are some examples of some very striking stories on our 'In My Shoes Stories' page.
- 'Add Your Stories' - we will put it on the stories page as soon as we can.
- Even better, send us a photo of your shoes too if you like (to cpu@sheffield.gov.uk). After all this is what its like to be in your shoes.
- Add your name if you want. This can be your real name or a pen name. Or leave it anonymous, if you prefer. No Problem.
- Other ways to tell your story are to go to one of the In My Shoes events - at the Peace Gardens or around the city, or visit your local library or the Town Hall Reception.
We will make the stories widely available for other people to read. We are looking at ways to showcase the stories for example in exhibitions and on the website. We will provide more details when we have them.
