Raising Aspirations and Attainment Together
Although many young people in Sheffield achieve well and have high ambitions, the number with poor educational outcomes is unacceptably high. Changing this is vital for the futures of many young people, for the local economy, and for the quality of life in our city.
We want to help more young people to aim high and achieve well in education. We want to challenge low expectations, wherever they come from. We need to take action in three areas:
We want to help more young people to aim high and achieve well in education. We want to challenge low expectations, wherever they come from. We need to take action in three areas:
- better schools in all parts of the city: Sheffield City Council and schools will work decisively to strengthen leadership, improve the quality of teaching and learning, and ensure all pupils have their progress regularly monitored with action taken to ensure they stay on track. There will be intensive support and intervention for all schools who need it.
- supporting parents and families: children’s services across all agencies will support all parents in helping their children to learn and will find new ways of helping families who do not currently have the capacity or confidence to do so. We will also identify and offer help to parents who are struggling with the demands of looking after children. We will find new ways of listening to the views of parents on the issues they care about.
- getting everyone in Sheffield to support higher achievement: we are asking businesses, public services, voluntary and community organisations, and Sheffield residents to take all possible action to promote the aspirations and attainment of children and young people, through the ways they deliver services or through volunteering their time, expertise and resources. We will also look to young people themselves to take a major role in influencing their peers.
Sheffield First Partnership led the urgent development of a city-wide Plan of Action. This sets out specific commitments for actions in these three areas to be implemented between now and 2010. We have consulted city partners and representatives of children, young people and parents on the priorities above and on actions needed to address them. We have been asking, and continue to ask Sheffield organisations to make a public pledge of the action they will take.
Make your Pledge for Success online, or contact jodie.eckhardt@sheffield.gov.uk, tel. 0114 273 6423 for advice on how you can support this campaign.
Are you pledging as an individual rather than an organisation? If so, please pledge via Sheffield City Council's website.
