Professor Michael SmithPhysical scientist by background with 30 years experience in research and exploitation in the medical and health sector, working in the Universities of Edinburgh and London before taking up the post of Professor of Medical Physics at the University of Leeds in 1989. Subsequently became Dean of Research for the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, Psychology and Health at the University of Leeds and Director of Research and Development in the Leeds NHS Teaching Hospitals before moving to the University of Teesside in 2003 to become Deputy Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for Research and Enterprise. In 2006, moved to Sheffield Hallam University as Pro Vice-Chancellor. Chartered Physicist, Chartered Scientist, Registered Clinical Scientist, Fellow of the Institute of Physicists and Engineers in Medicine, Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Fellow of the British Institute of Radiology. President of the Institute of Radiology in its Centenary Year and served on many national government committees. Rachel FletcherRachel Fletcher is Managing Director of FCS Associates, an economic regeneration consultancy she started in 2003 to provide support and advice to public and private sector clients on the delivery of regeneration and research projects of transformational significance. Rachel has been involved in a number of high profile developments and has a broad range of thematic interests including entrepreneurship, skills and research and development. Prior to establishing FCS, Rachel was Managing Director of Beta Technology, an innovation and technology consultancy company based in Doncaster. During her time at Beta, Rachel was the UK representative on the EU SME National Contact Point Committee. She was also responsible for the commercial development of Beta’s key services resulting in the company becoming the leading national SME technology and innovation consultancy company. Rachel has lived in Sheffield all her life apart from a brief period at Leicester University studying her first degree, which she has subsequently built upon undertaking an MBA at Sheffield Hallam University. Rachel’s previous Board participations have included that of Industrial Representative for the Learning and Skills Council and a member of the South Yorkshire Board for The Institute of Directors. Marina LariosMarina Larios is President of WiTEC Europe with offices in 14 member states and Director of Inova Consultancy, an organisation providing consultancy services in the area of diversity and equal opportunities. Marina has been a speaker at various international conferences presenting positive actions to increase the representation of female entrepreneurs and women in SET including recent presentations at the UN in New York and OECD in Geneva. She is currently an advisor for the Cambridge Centre of Gender Studies; Co-Founder of SYFEN (South Yorkshire Female Entrepreneurs Programme); ex-Trustee of the SYWDT; Co-Director of MEXWii ; Steering Group member of the BME Forum at the SCC and Co-Founder of the International Taskforce-Global Women in ICT launched at UNESCO, Paris in 2006. Marina was nominated for the “Businesswomen of the Year” Award 2007 – SCC and was recognised under the award of Enterprise Champion by SFEDI (Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative) in April 2008. Cllr Jan WilsonCllr Jan Wilson is the Leader of the Labour Group at Sheffield City Council. She was born and bred in Sheffield. She was elected to the city council in 1992 and now represents the Manor Castle Ward. In her sixteen years as a councillor, Jan has held many positions of responsibility, including Leader of the Council in 1998, and from 2002 to 2008 during which time she chaired the Sheffield First Partnership board. She has also chaired the cabinet, the planning and economic development and education committees. She is a member of the Board of Yorkshire Forward and is deputy chair of the Passenger Transport Authority. Ian DraytonIan was born in Warwick and has lived in Sheffield since 1979. He started work for Yorkshire Water as a Waste Water Treatment Operator and Trade Union Convenor before becoming their Health & Safety Manager. From 2000, he worked for Sheffield Community Enterprise Development Unit. He currently works for Southey and Owlerton Area Regeneration Partnership (SOAR) as their Partnership Manager. He has supported the development of many social enterprises, one the most innovative being a construction company called SOAR Build - a joint venture between SOAR and Keepmoat. Ian was the first direct employee of SOAR in September 2005 and has taken the business from 100% grant reliance to 5% reliance in 5 years. SOAR has developed a holistic approach to employability aligning services based on the whole person/household approach. SOAR are also developing two capital projects that have a gross value of £8.5m. Ian currently lives in Pitsmoor and in is his spare time he plays squash, football and the congas. |
Steve RundellSteve is the Manager of Gleadless Valley Community Forum, a regeneration agency in one of Sheffield’s most deprived communities. The Forum is one of the most trusted charitable organisations in Sheffield. Steve began his career as a trainee accountant after completing his degree in English and Philosophy. He then worked for the Greater London Council as Deputy Head of Administration up until its demise in 1986. That year saw him travelling extensively in South and North America before moving into education and taking up a variety of posts in Athens. Steve returned to London nine years later and discovered his true interest -working in charity development for a small children’s project, Hackney Quest. He and a Volunteer Coordinator turned the project from a failing initiative to a highly regarded agency in the space of three years. Steve settled in Sheffield in 2005 and cut his teeth in community regeneration at Together for Regeneration, part of the Diocese of Sheffield followed by a very valuable 2 ½ years working at SOAR. He now lives with his wife and young daughter in Sheffield and enjoys the outdoor life, particularly scuba diving whenever the chance arises and daily walks with the dog out into the Peaks. Jan SobierajJan Sobieraj is Chief Executive of NHS Sheffield, with a budget of approximately £850m and 2,500 staff. NHS Sheffield has three distinct challenges. These are, in collaboration and consultation with all local stakeholders, to tackle the inequality, health and well-being of its population (a 14-year life gap exists), to commission a comprehensive and equitable range of high quality, responsive and efficient services and to decide the best way to provide these services where this gives best value. Before his appointment Jan was Chief Executive of Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and previously Chief Executive at an NHS Trust in Lincolnshire working in community and mental health services. Jan is a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Centre of Health Improvement and Leadership at the University of Lincoln and Sheffield Hallam University, Governor of the Health Foundation, a member of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement Sounding Board and a member of the NHS National Advisory Committee for Resource Allocation. Beverley WebsterBeverley Webster ran a manufacturing company for over 20 years producing equipment for the mining and construction industries and as the first woman and youngest ever president of her sector trade association received an OBE for services to industry. Now a fully qualified IFA, she understands the pressures facing owners/managers in balancing business and personal financial planning. Beverley served on the Small Business Council, presenting recommendations from industry to the Secretary of State for Industry and was a member of the Foundation Degree Task Force advising Ministers on future strategy for the development of vocational qualifications. She now sits on the Foundation Degree Forward management board and as Chairman of the UK Careers Academy Advisory Board to Longley Park Sixth Form College is committed to raising aspirations of young people in Sheffield. |
